FOURTH GRADERS GO OVER THEIR MATH LESSONS.

Miguel Hildago is a project started by VAMOS! in 2001 when leaders from this colonia, in the municipality of Temixco,  came to us and asked for our assistance.  They had heard and seen some of our other programs and wanted – and needed – the same types of services:  meals, schooling and medical services for their children.  There was also a local center for elderly people near by that was closing and so they asked if we could work with the seniors as well.

The elderly are often lost, lonely and forgotten in these poor neighborhoods with most having no  access to any social security or other government safety net.  Here, five days a week they gather to share a meal, exercise, meet with their friends, and work on a variety of crafts that they use at home, or sell, or give as gifts.  The spirit here is wonderful with the group of 30 or so, mostly women, chatting and working busily at their crafts, enjoying a fresh-cooked healthy meal and then walking home.

Three afternoons a week we have our full children’s and mother’s program, hosting an average of  110 pre-school and elementary aged children and about 40 women.  Everyone receives a healthy and nourishing meal and classes in math, reading and writing.  Also our rotating medical services are here once every other week, plus our weekly computer and music classes.
