MUSIC PROGRAM

Music Program

Almost from the beginning mothers asked for Music classes for their children and so VAMOS! started our Music Classes for children in 2000.  VAMOS! has a full-time music teacher and dozens of guitars, ukeleles, and melodicas. Our music program is focused in six of our centers where we work with mainly teenagers who are at two levels, beginners and advanced. Advanced children are allowed to take their guitars home. So many studies have proven that music education increases a student’s academic achievement in so many ways – ranging from improving their ability to retain and recall information to increasing communication

skills, creativity, discipline, the ability to solve problems and to work cooperatively, all skills that are needed throughout our lives and perhaps nowhere more than in the poor neighborhoods where VAMOS! has our programs. Maybe the best reason to include music education in our projects is because, as Bono says, “Music can change the world because it can change people."

THE VAMOS! IMPACT

Cultural Enrichment: Learning music exposes children to cultural traditions and enriches their lives with the beauty of music. It allows them to explore their creativity and express themselves through art, fostering a sense of cultural pride and identity.

Educational Benefits: Music education has been linked to cognitive development and academic achievement. Learning to play an instrument can improve memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills.

Emotional Well-being: Music has the power to uplift spirits and promote emotional well-being. In communities facing adversity, such as poverty and violence, the VAMOS! music program offers a positive and constructive activity that promotes resilience and coping skills.

Social Connection: Music brings people together and fosters social connections. Through the VAMOS! music program, children have the opportunity to collaborate with peers, form friendships, and build a sense of community.

Skill Development: Learning to play musical instruments cultivates important skills such as discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Children in the VAMOS! music program develop a strong work ethic as they practice and improve their musical abilities. They also learn to collaborate with others in ensemble settings, honing their communication and interpersonal skills.

Future Opportunities: For talented and dedicated students, the VAMOS! music program can open doors to future opportunities in music and beyond. Children who develop proficiency in playing instruments may pursue further musical training or even consider careers in music performance, education, or composition. Even for those who do not pursue music professionally, the skills and experiences gained through the program can have a lasting impact on their personal and professional lives.
